A Fortune Founded in Gunpowder

Our story begins in 1800, when Pierre Samuel du Pont de Nemours immigrated to the United States from France. His son Eleuthère Irénée du Pont quickly established a gunpowder mill on the banks of the Brandywine River. This would grow into the largest black powder manufacturing firm in the world, and later, a chemical pioneer: The DuPont Company. The family planted their roots — and riches — in the beautiful Brandywine Valley, sharing a passion for horticulture, architecture and preservation that is alive today at museums and gardens throughout the region.
